That is the reason why I am trying to improve basic form everyday.

Once you get standard basic form (How you stand, how you shoot, how to grip, how to use force..)
, you can follow the practices or technique the book showing you. Otherwise you just invent wheel by myself, looking for improvement in your darkness, not learning from others.

My friend spend about 2 yr. about 4-5 hr a day to play snooker but no improvement at all since they try to invent the wheel by themselves. The root of problem is their basic form cannot support those technique.

In these serveral days(2006.Oct.24 - Oct.26) , I almost come to club house for practices everyday. I notice the level of snooker is much lower than China.

It is reasonable the mainland snooker player spend 3 or 4 hour in snooker everyday. 1 hour for practising in their own everyday. And also someone show them howto practices, pinpoint their weakest point so that they improve so fast.

Age range : 16 - 60 yrs. old

I feel also.

Most of them likes to snooker gambling (RMB$30 - $50) for each game among friends, outsiders RMB$200 - 3000, at least a set - 5 game or 8 game, owner snooker house RMB$2000 - $5000 a game at least 3 game.

So they are very serious snooker player but you do not gamble with them. They seldom display their real capability to you. Most of time they pretend to be dummy and lose in friendship game by intention.

/* Snooker gambling in mainland China */
-------------------------------------------------------

Price list
Friendship : RMB$30 - $50 each game
Outsiders : RMB$200 - 3000, at least a set - 5 game or 8 game,
Owner snooker house : RMB$2000 - $5000 a game at least 3 game.
Challange between snooker house : RMB$10,000 each game

Unit : each game

Usually, mainland snooker 20 points in one break. If you are not up to that level, don't gamble with them.

/* My first Cue*/
----------------------------

My teacher assign first exercise is distance long straight shoot. The requirement is 90% accuracy. So my friend - cue expert sell me 21.5 oz. It help me to distance long straight.

Distance straight shoot help us to correct posture (form)
1. eliminate any deviation
2. eliminate any sides on cue ball
3. lock upper arm
4. lock standing form

This is how I spend first 3 month in snooker - i.e I start learning from 2006.Feb. It means 2006.Feb to 2006.May just distance straight shoot 2 hour a day boring exercise. I take snooker to keep reducing my body weight.

Steve Davis alway check his straight shoot before attending the final of champion and do many straight shoot check exercise. This make him has perfect straight shoot - get accurate long shoot to win the match.

Second Lesson : basic cue method
1. Follow shoot (higher)
2. Medium shoot
3. Lower shoot
4. Pull back shoot

In "Pull back shoot", the requirement is pulling back 2M from target ball. I spend almost 4 weeks but cannot get it done. The power "Pull Back Shoot" depends on
1. tips friction
2. tips shape
3. cue weight
4. accerlerate distance between tips and cue
5. penetration of target ball
6. hitting point of cue ball
7. bridge
8. how you grip the cue

For this exercise, I buy another cue, try different tips (Omin, Burnswick, Blue Diamond), different tips shape. At last, I find out cue is not key factor but tips friction, tip shape is "damn" important for power "Pull Back" shoot.

My friend - cue expert tells me:
tips : give friction to cue ball
cue : give elastic force to cue ball

When I see Mr. Ding playing, he just apply slight force to cue ball but the cue ball pull back, and then bounce the cushion, head toward "black ball" standard position. This tell me "Cue" is not so important for this shoot. "Slight force" don't give cue ball strong elastic force but hitting point, tips plays crucial part in this brilliant shoot.

My friend bought "Jimmy White limited version cue" about HK$1500 in 1986 and sell it to me in 2006.This cue has good elastic force so that I just apply slight force to pull back cue ball in 1M

For daily practices, I just use very cheap , cheap cue under HK$200 but it is same weight as my Jimmy White cue. It is OK for me.

I care about
1. tips friction
2. tips shape
3. basic form
more than cue.

To Dickson,

What is your opinions on the choice of cue?
According to the way of practice, cue is not important at all.
Is it OK to do so?

Most member have a aiming problem of middle pocket, or low success rate because they don't know aimming point.

Aim point of middle pocket :
Spot that connect centre of cue ball to far side of middle pocket

/* Tip shape and shoot */
-------------------------------------

To JK47
Your cue is good for push and follow, not for "Pull back shoot".

Since tips head is flat, it means you cannot apply enough friction to cue ball. It makes your cue ball cannot pull back even you apply "Pull back".

The fact is that cue ball is sphere, so good tip head is
1. flat at the top (for push and follow)
2. curve at the edge (for pull back)

As you want "Pull back shoot", press palm downward a bit to make curve surface of tip heads having large contact surface to cue ball so that tip can apply friction to cue ball, cue ball can be pulled back

Last night (2006.Oct.26) , you have about 45 points lead in the match. It is so good.

If you can lock upper arm and knows some basic cue ball placing technique, you will get more than that.

/* Common Practices Problem */
---------------------------------------

Most of snooker player cannot understand the technique described in the book.So they just some common practices. But those practices may not fit their need. In last, they don't improve much even after they practices a lot and long time.
