Does anybody ever experience missing a very easy final black pot? I'm having this experience recently. I had 5 games in 2 nights that missed a very easy final black pot. I could sank it 99 out of 100 time in practice. Not that I didn't sank it - I had left the black right at the pocket, and didn't even bother to ask my oppenent (which I give 25 point handicap) to finished it. I didn't have any pressure when potting those blacks- I had played fairly decent all the time and making good breaks. I am still trying to figure out what happened with the final black.

It's not a matter of confidence. I didn't even felt any pressure. They were just simple and easy shot. Even a novice can make it 9 out of 10 times. (not to mention that my highest break is 89 and I make 20-30s break regularly). I have been studying snooker for quite some time and know that snooker or any cue sports is a sport of mental games. Following is some of my experience about this mental game that might interest some of you. Thoughts are very powerful and can influence player when making a shoot. Even when a player knows that he/she should not have any negative thoughts when going for a pot. It is very difficult to control one's mind for thoughts. Thoughts come and go regularly whether you like it or not. So how do you deal with thoughts especially the negative ones? Thoughts arise IN our mind, but they are NOT our mind. By observing our thoughts and the feelings that precede and follow them, we can begin to experience a gap in sequence of impulse-to-thought-to-action, and we can choose how to RESPOND rather than automactically react. Thoughts come and go, dissolving as easily as they arose, you have a choice what you pay attention to and what you disregard. They have power only to the exent that you give it to them. I hope some of you might understanding.

Let talk about my strokes. Call it automatic strokes. What am I talking about? Snooker is a game of memory. First, I had established a working technique, stance this way, hold cue like that, aim there, practice strokes, pause #1, pause #2,rhythms, final delivery, timing, etc etc. and I will pocket the ball successfully, and keep practicing or I call it teaching consciously to my every motor control until it is ingrained in the banks of my mind, and it will command my body to do so automatically, for example, WITHOUT CONSCIOUSLY THINKING ABOUT IT. Most of the best players plays on unconscious processes. One can acquire new unconscious process through deliberate, conscious work. One need to trust the unconscious, rather than trying to control everything consciously! And so it will do everytime thereafter, unless, of course, you start getting lazy and inadvertently get into bad habits, which will then reduce the success rate and put you back to square one. This is the hard part: once I had established a working technique which gave me a high success rate, I have to maintain it; let failure into my routine and it will surely breed more failure.

Anybody seen how Steve Davis missed the final black on the Greatest Embassy Championship of all time in 1985 against Dennis Taylor? Davis had a easy cut on the black aimed on the corner pocket. He over cut the black and let Taylor with a open shot. Taylor won his only Embassy Championship that year. I am sure that Davis with his level at that time, he can make that black 99 out of a 100 times in practice.

o well...
then i guess you can't avoid missing easy shots altogether

if the stroke is automatically delivered as you described, then
unless your subconscious mind is flawless in guiding your cue(which is highly unlikely), there's no way you can ensure you won't make any mistakes.

may be that's why some pros say sometimes they tried to be "deliberate" when they play.

but come on, missing one black out of 99 times is good enough.. ^^
i miss one out of two times.

Top players will delibrate play the game. But they are unlikely will deliberate control their cue action or strokes movements during a real game. Best players often cripple their games by trying to exert excessive conscious controls, thus undermining unconscious controls. Beginning and intermediate players do this constantly. Of course, some nights we can't even hold the cue straight nor have a proper stance without constantly reminding ourselves. Nothing seems right on bad nights. But we have to develop our cue action so that it become automatically. This is done by consiously building new wiring to our unconscious mind throught our practices. This is like riding a motocycle, you do not have to consciously think to balance the bike or when to hold the clutch and when to shift gears once you have built the wiring to your unconcsious mind. If we do, we will have a very difficult time and would not enjoy the ride. We learnt to ride a motocycle through conciously practices our body movement and ingrained it in our mind - everything comes automatically. But again, unless you are a nature player, beware of picking up bad habits when we delibrately teaching our unconcsious mind. For a very simple example, not pausing before the final delivery.
