Um...
In my opinion, try not to use WD40.

Cue joints are usually made of copper.
After some time, the copper surface would oxidize and become copper oxide (greenish blue in colour).
In this case, the joint would become too "tight" and cause the strange noise.
Another reason is because your joint is dirty.

WD40 is an oil-based lubricant.
Yes, this can get rid of the strange noise with WD40.
But since it is oil-based, this would cause the joint "easy to loose".

There is another more proper way to fix the problem.
1. First, wipe your joint with a cloth. (Remove dust)
2. Second, clean the joint with a little bit of ¬Ù»É¤ô. (Remove copper oxide)
3. Finally, coat the joint with a little bit of wax.

One important different between WD40 and wax is wax is not "slippery" on metal surface.
(Try it and you will know what I mean.)
So your joint can be solidly tight. (Don't put too much!)

This is a method widely used.

By the way, this method works as well when the screw of the joint is slightly damaged.
