Why do younger players tend to make more pots than older players do? They also play in a faster pace than experienced senior players do. It stands for a reason - Thanks to Memories.
As we grew up, good behaviors was expected and bad was punished. We treat ourselves that way on the table, expecting perfection and punishing any mistakes. No wonder it can be hard to relax and enjoy ourselves. This is a survival mechanism inherited from prehistoric times.
If a caveman walked around in a new territory and came upon a group of big lions, it would be helpful for his survival to remember that territory. The same goes for powerful positive emotion. His mind will strongly register another area if he found food there. But if he walked to a waste land and found nothing, there would be no reason to remember it. Another example; We might not remember what we have for dinner two days ago, but we remember what we have eaten on our birthday a year ago. Emotional experience register more strongly in memory than ordinary experiece.
In snooker; if we make a 5 foot straight line shot (cue ball to pocket is 5 foot object ball in the middle), there may be some relief but not usually a lot of emotion. However, when we miss that pot, there is often a reaction of frustration and anger. That emotional reaction imprints more strongly in our memory, which means the image of missing that shot is more likely to come to mind when we encounter a similar 5 foot straight pot. Soon it's self-fulling prophecy and we feel like a poor snooker player. This cycle is one reason why senior snooker players sometimes struggle with potting. It's not that their nerves are less steady; it's just that they remember more misses!
I hope you like my post. I'll try illustrate how some top senior players deal with this emotion memories. Thank you for viewing.

Sure. I like it.
Just curious to know if you are also one of top senior players as mentioned in the post since you sounded like one. |

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-02 AT 06:49 AM (GMT)]How to deal with negative thoughts (from past experience)?
One example of this is being in a position of an important shot (miss and die or pot to win).
According to sport psychology, we produced these negative thoughts of past experience. We produce thoughts of missing a similar pot. Fear made the image completely fill our mind. Then our body did a great job of fulfilling the image and we produce what we feared.. Bang! Object ball to the cushion and left it open for your opponent.
This error stands for a reason: On psychological level, our thinking mind will take over control of our body movement. We are overly cautious and hesitant. If we're afraid of missing the shot, we try to steer our cue, make an awkward stroke, and the ball will not heads to the pocket.
On the physical level, our bodies are geared to freeze and stop breathing. The blood flows to our big muscles (as if we are ready to run from fear), our hands, legs got tighten and poor stroke will produce.
So, as we may know, negative thoughts play a big role in our poor performance. We cannot control our thoughts. But we can deal with them. The best way to deal with our thoughts is to observe them. Our mind produces our thoughts, but we are NOT our thoughts. Our thoughts are images usually something that is in the future or the past. We are in the present and it stand for now. We've to recognize that thoughts are only images and not ourselves, we can observe it and say 'Hmmm, interesting' Do not get involve with it but just notice it. Just as if we are walking down a busy street and we notice lot of people passing by. We notice them, but we would not try to stop them or get involve with them. Do not ignore them either or we will bump into them. Just notice them and keep walking to where we intended to go.
We can, however, replace our thoughts. Clear our mind of any negative images of what we don't want to happen, replacing them with positive images of what we do want as the outcome (sending the cue ball to the target) or good intentions of what it going to be. Then body and mind are synchronized and focused on the shot at hand without the interference of fear.
A little experiment, Face a 5 foot straight line shoot. Fill up our mind with negative thoughts. Take the shot. Most likely, we will miss the shot. Take the same shot again, fill up with good intention and synchronize our body and mind (Present). Do not worry about the outcome - just good intention to our target. We will see the different between these two shots.
Also, do not get too emotional involve if we did not make the pot. This will cause your mind to register the shot and will eventally bring it up the next time we face a similar shot and bring up fear again. Thank you for sharing my thoughts. Happy snooker :)
