I’ll like to talk about ‘Dead Stroke’ or some people call it ‘The Zone’. I am sure that every snooker player has experienced it before. You can’t force yourself to go to ‘Dead Stroke’ or ‘The Zone’. It just doesn’t work. It can only be found within yourself. Deep within yourself. And sometime it cannot be found at all.
Dead Stroke or The Zone is that you are in a stage that you feel as though you are capable of doing anything at the table, engrossed in your task and oblivious to everything else. You can pot any ball on the table - no matter if it was a difficult shot or not (without second-guess). You feel like Snooker God.
Dead Stroke can come in anytime and it can also slip away very quick. Dead Stroke is a mental state. During this period of absolute focus and concentration, there are no verbal thoughts.
I’ll like to know if any of our members can make Dead Stroke stay longer during our game? I’ll like to hear from your experience and I’ll share mine on my next post. Thank you for viewing.

How do we get to 'The Zone'?
To answer that question, we must first ask ourselves: How we will NOT get there? We can't force ourselves into playing in 'The Zone'. It just doesn't work.
There are counter-productive ingredient that prevent us to get to 'The Zone'. These are : getting angry, frustrated with our play, self blaming on our strokes, blaming all the flukes from your opponent, negative thoughts, and not being self center. All of the above contradict with the word ENJOYMENT.
If we are playing without enjoying ourselves, we are like beating our head against a brick wall. Keep shooting balls and trying to play through the trouble will match Einstein's definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again in the same way, hoping to get a different result. On the other hand, if we approach with a different attitude, then go out there and play, that would be playing toward something new and not waste of time and effort.
The remedies to get to the zone is we need to be in a total RELAX stage. ENJOY our play. A state where it is just you, the cue, the balls and the table, and you're oblivious (lack conscious awareness) to everything else. Knowing that we are capable of doing it. Do not get emotional involve with our mistakes. Trust our strokes, let it become our second nature. (let subconscious mind control our strokes) Control our thoughts - Replace all thoughts with positive images (images of sending the cue ball to our intended target without worrying about the consequence). Synchronize our mind with our body (Present Time - No future, No past) Breath right. (There are many breathing techniques, I don't want to get too deep into this. But breathing right will relax our muscle) Being Center (I'll get to this on my next post)
Snooker is a mental game. You will not win if your biceps muscle is bigger than mine. It's all come to our mind. Nature players do have an advantage because of their talent - they get a head start. But with hard works, non-nature players (like myself) can also be trained to compete with them. Mind training is what we need. Happy snooker and thank you for sharing my 'Zone' ;)

To Dickson,
We can be relax and still be focused on our task. For example: Driving a car can be very relaxing and yet we can still focus on the road. We can be relax and still keep our car in between lanes and make precise turns, etc. Let our 'Subconscious Mind' control our mechanic movement, such as hitting the clutch and direct our hand to shift gears. Imagine how difficult it would be if our 'Thinking Mind' takes over these tasks. Consciously thinking of hitting the clutch, shifting gears, and brakes are very awkward. We wouldn't be ENJOYING our ride.
Another example: We are relax when we read our favorite story book. Yet, we are still focus on what we are reading. Sometime we are so focus that we are also being part of the story lines. This is what I call ENJOYMENT. A state where it is just you, the cue, the balls and the table, and you're oblivious (lack conscious awareness) to everything else.
Thank you for your feedback.
To hawk, I am never good enough, there is always room for improvement.
Thank you MT and adrian for your comments. And thanks to other members sharing this with me.
I like reading Chinese characters. It makes me feel more like home. Please post me messages in Chinese. ;) |

I also had the same question as Dickson. Thank you for your easy understanding explanation. Try to put it on the table next time. Waiting for your next post. (I am sorry my PC is not using Chinese OS, and I don't know chinese characters typing. Therefore... I also like to read chinese characters because i am also staying overseas.)

These are statements from Marco after the match with Hann. We can see he used the words such as RELAX and ENJOY.
http://www.worldsnooker.com/snooker_media_centre/uk2002/articleshow.asp?articleID=1174&categoryID=67
"I spent time on the practice table in between sessions and felt quite relaxed going into the final session. I knew if I could win three of the first four frames I would put him under pressure. I could see he was getting frustrated."
"I will be the underdog but I don't mind people writing me off. That takes a bit of pressure off me. I just want to go out there and enjoy it." |
