(星島日報報道)正當全球歡度聖誕迎接新年之際，亞洲國家突遭世紀天災浩劫。印尼蘇門答臘昨早發生八點九級大地震，威力相當於三千枚原子彈爆炸，地震再觸發大海嘯，高達十米巨浪向四周輻射，衝擊東南亞多國沿岸，遠及馬爾代夫也不能倖免，數以千萬計人們對大難臨頭毫無防備，瞬間慘遭衝天巨浪捲走或溺斃於淊淊洪水。至少八個國家受害，其中以斯里蘭卡、印度災情最重，死傷枕藉。至本報截稿時，至少超過一萬人死亡，大批人受傷，無家可歸人們不計其數。
慘遭海嘯蹂躝的泰國布吉島，傷亡嚴重。當地一間醫院證實，至少有一對香港新婚夫婦遭巨浪擊倒，險些捲進大海，幸傷勢不重。但令人擔心的是，民主黨主席李永達(相關新聞 - 網站)偕同太太到布吉海邊遊玩，該黨昨晚未與他取得聯絡。而行政會議成員梁振英(相關新聞 - 網站)曾表示會在聖誕期間，與家人到馬爾代夫潛水，政府新聞處應傳媒要求查詢其去向，至本報凌晨一時截稿時，仍未有回覆。
另外，本港不少政經界名人在聖誕期間均出外旅遊，據悉，港交所主席李業廣、無綫電視製作資源部副總監樂易玲均身在布吉，惟昨日亦失去聯絡。國際巨星李連杰(相關新聞 - 網站)身在馬爾代夫，經理人正設法聯絡中。
布吉島是港人旅遊熱點，當巨浪在早上撲向海灘時，不少人正在海邊暢泳或躺在沙灘上曬太陽，不知身陷險境。當時香港人王智恒和太太正在沙灘上，巨浪掩至時，兩人與大群遊人均走避不及，遭巨浪打中。
王智恒在當地醫院接受電視訪問時表示，他與新婚太太到布吉度蜜月，事發時兩人正在巴東海灘準備游泳，突然有很大的浪拍岸，他和太太走避不及受傷，「當時好恐怖，（海浪）只是三十秒就出現了……傷勢方面，我們輕微受傷，是腳部受傷，是被海嘯的海浪捲走，現在我及太太已安全。」
身兼行政會議成員的自由黨立法會議員周梁淑怡(相關新聞 - 網站)，與夫婿周明權前赴泰國曼谷旅遊。她其中一名女兒昨晚在接受本報查詢時表示，昨午已與父母聯繫，得知他們無恙。她表示，事發時，父母在酒店內，未有感覺到地震。
不過，民主黨主席兼立法會議員李永達，日前與太太陳樹英以自由行形式往泰國旅遊。該黨發言人表示，兩人應入住布吉海灘的酒店，黨方多次致電未能接通，暫時未知兩人情況，他們原定今日返港。黨方已透過中國駐泰國曼谷大使館尋找他們。
另一方面，據早前有報道引述行政會議成員梁振英表示，他會在聖誕期間，與太太和三名子女一起去馬爾代夫旅行。據外電報道，當地亦受到海嘯巨浪衝擊。本報向政府發言人查詢梁的去向，發言人指梁到了外地，但不知他在何處。
據初步統計，本港至少有三十多個旅行團共一千二百多人在泰國布吉旅遊，暫時全部安全。為安全計，多間旅行社紛紛取消出發往布吉的旅遊團。
保安局截至昨晚十時，共接二百一十九宗市民查詢親人在泰國的情況及一百零九宗求助個案。身在外地的居民或其親友如需協助，可與當地中國大使館聯絡，或致電入境處的求助熱綫二八二九三○一○。
康泰旅行社總經理劉美詩說，旅行社會盡快安排四百名在泰國團友返港。

cut from my friend's description about his trip in Thailand.

My parents, my wife, my 3yrs old daughter and I arrived safely and in one piece last night. None of us is hurt, fortunately. A 20-second difference would make our lives totally different

Too many lucky things for this trip:

- We arrived in Phuket, Le Meridien Hotel (Khao Lak Beach) 25th evening. We got a room on 3rd floor. When we got into the room, my father asked the staff where the beach was, and seeing that it's about 5-7 min walk to the beach, he asked if we can get a room closer to the beach. But fortunately, we didn't change room.

- Bangkok is 1 hour behind HK. So, my parents are already up the next day (26th) around 9am HK time (8am Phuket.) Looking back, my wife said it was really lucky that I got up late (because I was watching Die Hard on TV the previous night). We went to have breakfast around 10:30am HK time. If we went half an hour earlier, we would be at the swimming pool when the wave struck. And you won't be seeing this email.

- We all feel the slight shaking while we were sleeping on the bed. The thought of earthquake came into our mind, but looking around in our room, nothing was really shaking. You can only feel it if you lie on the bed. And we forgot about this shaking soon after.

- At breakfast, we were able to see the beach from our table. Suddenly, my Dad and my wife noticed some people running back from the beach, looking as if some sharks are behind them. Then, we noticed a long white wave, long in the sense that you can't see the left end and the right end. Just a long white wall. How high, I cannot tell. How far away, I cannot tell. And my Dad took the camera and went closer to take a look. That was about 5 mins before the strike. I also was about to take my daughter to go take a closer look. My Mom said my daughter needs to wash her hands first, and my wife took her the washroom.

- And this is my wife's report. While they were in washroom, suddenly the light went out. My daughter got scared, and it was again very lucky that they came out really quick, and returned to the table. And I was about to take my daughter to go take a closer look at the big wave.

- And that was the time my Dad ran back, shouting go back, go up. Everyone came running back, running for their lives, and I can see the wave has reached the beach, rushing toward us.

- I grabbed my daughter, and ran for the stairs. So did most other people. Screams, yell, people falling down… And I just hold my daughter and went up and up, looking down from time to time, hoping the water won't come up to 3rd floor. That's the highest we can get.

- And the water did stop on the 2nd floor. 1st floor was all drowned. You can see beds, TV, refrigerators, cars, trucks everywhere…

- We all stayed in our room for almost an hour. Saw and heard people running, crying… At that time, my Dad was not with us yet. Later we knew he went up the other stairs, and the East Wing & West Wing got isolated by the water. In an hour's time, the water level had gone down a bit, and he came back to us. What a relief!

- The hotel evacuated us to a hospital about 45 mins from the hotel. Spent a night there, sleeping on the ground. All our luggages were left at the hotel.

- 27th morning, we were moved to another bigger hospital, and then transported to the bus stop. A bus was arranged to take about 70 foreigners to the airport. At the airport, we found that there is only one direct flight back to HK at 7:25pm. We were on the waiting list. And again it was lucky that we were able to get on the plane.

- And that's why you can see this email.

If I can thank them, I would want to say million thanks to the local people in Phuket who helped us, gave us food and clothes at the hospital. They were only local people, and most likely poor people. May peace be with everyone in Phuket, and all those countries that were hit by this tsunamis.
