Hendry squares up to Holt with a new cue
TREVOR BAXTER

STEPHEN HENDRY has been a professional for nearly 20 years but the seven times world champion was set for a new experience when making his first appearance in the LG Cup.

Hendry was set for a tricky opening match against Nottingham¡¦s Michael Holt - and is having to do so with a new cue.

His old wooden wand that yielded in excess of £7million prize money, 34 ranking titles and more than 600 century breaks was smashed to smithereens while in the cargo hold of a long distance flight back from Thailand five weeks ago.

"My first reaction when I saw the cue smashed up was that ¡¥it¡¦s the end of my career,¡¦" recalls the world No.2 from Auchterarder.

However, the 34-year-old Scot won¡¦t be quitting. But for the first time in two decades he¡¦ll be playing with a new cue, made by master cue-smith John Parris.

"It took a while to get used to because it¡¦s a little thicker and slightly heavier than my old one. It¡¦s actually a better piece of wood. Anyway it¡¦s not the cue that does the job, but the person holding it."

Hendry won one ranking title last season - the Regal Welsh Open - and he¡¦d love to get his hands on one of the few trophies missing from his collection.

He¡¦d also like to reclaim top spot in the rankings from stable-mate Mark Williams.

"Mark¡¦s got such a big lead, it¡¦s going to be really tough to catch him. All I can do is what I always do and that¡¦s to try and win every single tournament."

While Hendry takes to the table at the Guild Hall for the first time this year, compatriot Chris Small is back for a second match against livewire Paul Hunter. And the 30-year-old defending champion hopes he doesn¡¦t have to go through the pain barrier like he did in the previous round against Stuart Pettman.

Small, badly hampered by his long-standing back complaint, needed over four hours to win 5-4 from 4-1 down.

"I¡¦ve been for a couple of swims and hopefully that will help," says the Leith star, who contemplated quitting at the interval against Pettman because of the pain.

"I¡¦m going to have to play better against Hunter," he concedes.

"And I will try and change my attitude and stay positive. But sometimes I find it hard to stay positive."

Small¡¦s slow play has got under the skin of a number of players down the years.

But his methodical approach won¡¦t fluster Hunter, easily the most laid back player on the circuit.

"Chris must have played well to come back from 4-1 down in his last match," said the 25-year-old Yorkshireman.

"We¡¦ve played a couple of times and our record is pretty even.

"It¡¦s not going to be a quick game, I know that. But that¡¦s the way he plays so I can¡¦t do anything about it."

Choosing your cue with the Nugget

Steve Davis
BBC snooker pundit

Most top players have their cues specially made, but that's not to say you can't buy a decent one from a shop shelf.

Here's a guide to the things you should look out for.

THE BASICS
Remember a cue is only a bit of wood! It doesn't have to be hand-crafted to be any good.

Alan McManus still plays with a machine-made cue and Stephen Hendry won all his World Championships with a basic cue.

Cueing up with Mr Davis

It is simply a case of whatever suits the individual.

Most people think they need a cue with certain qualities. You might think you know what you want but you don't.

It's very important to stay with the same cue and practice with it. You need time to tune into it, it won't tune into you!

You might even have a back-up cue but it won't play the same, even if it's made to the same dimensions.

Each bit of wood is different. So my advice is to buy a cue and stick with it. And if you can, get a feel of the cue at your snooker club before purchase.

TOP TIPS

The cue has got to feel comfortable, but the most important thing is the tip.

The biggest difference is its diameter and surface area. This has the most significant effect on the cue's characteristics.

Most players use 9mm tips, but they can go up to 11mm.
The bigger tip is better for beginners. A thinner tip can be really lively and takes good cueing to keep control of the ball.

Academy: Learn to control the cue ball

The hardness of a tip varies as well. A hard tip may last a bit longer but it's gets shiny quickly and won't grip the ball properly.

Whereas a soft tip tends to collapse on contact and pushes the ball off course. Ideally, you want something in between.

A ferrule should be attached to the end of the cue, which the tip attaches to. This prevents the end of the cue from splitting and protects it when replacing a tip.

MEASURING UP

Most cues are about 58 inches long.
Dimensions haven't changed much over the years, although most players now favour a three-quarter length cue with a quick release button to allow for the screw-in extension.

But a two-piece is not essential. The only benefit of this is the convenience of travelling with it.

The majority of cues are 17-17.5 ounces. Just pick the cue up and see if it feels right in the hand.
Stephen Hendry has a light cue, while Jimmy White has a heavy one. It's all about how YOU feel.

MATERIALS

The best cues are made from ash or maple.
They have similar characteristics, although the American pool players would never use ash.

The grain on ash is sometimes heavier and can help when sighting your shot but it's quite often a fad thing.

Some say that because maple is a white wood it simply looks better. You decide.

TAKING CARE

Treat your cue with respect because it's your friend!

Most of this is common sense but it needs to be said. Don't leave it where it can be knocked over, or lean it against a wall because it can warp.

And don't leave it in a car in the hot weather.

See it as a piece of antique furniture that you want to last forever.

And no matter how well or badly you get on in a match, go easy on it!

Mike Hallett once smashed his cue into four pieces after losing.
